Quite frankly this one is going to be incredibly short.
1) No one is listening.
I never did this to make money or become famous. I felt compelled to do this because I have experience and training that could be useful to others right now. But according to Twitter most of you are at the beach. If it were not for the fact that Alan is high-risk, I’d say Darwin knew his shit.
But more importantly, I’m not wasting my time inside either. Except I am doing something essential for Food Security at @HomeCrazzyHome. Instead of going to the beach (which is just a 15-minute walk by the way), I am getting out into the sunshine in the relative safety of my own garden.
The other reason I am not wasting my time on here is:
2) Most of the work has already been done for me.
Better than I could and with an established audience already.
So, my message today is simple:
Watch this video:
Okay, now that you have. I just have a couple of things to mention.
1) Gardening is a mix of science and art.
What works for Huw in his climate might not for you. Please do research on your local environment and what grows best there.
2) You aren’t gonna get it right the first time.
This was my garden last summer:
Looks pretty impressive? Yet, we did not properly harvest or store as well as we could have or should have.
You’re gonna fail. Learn and do better next year. Fail better. And repeat.
But every little bit helps, especially in these trying times.
3) Do more research.
Even I feel like I am behind in this game. I am scrambling to learn all that I can. Not just about gardening either.
But here are a couple more sources that I have found useful. Just remember:
Where you live determines what you can grow.
Self-Sufficient Me – I love Mark’s sexy Australian accent but his advice is pretty good too. But remember what I said up above. Much of what he is able to achieve in the milder climate there, I can’t here in the UK. On the other hand, I bet he’d love to have my rainfall.
Morag Gamble Our Permaculture Life
…and too many more to list. But if you know of others, please drop a link in the comments.
One final point: Most of those YouTubers are commercial. They are trying to sell their books and/or have sponsors, whose products may or may not be useful to you. There is nothing wrong with that. We all need to live and if they can do that while achieving their dream then good on them. I just want you to be aware that you may not want or need every item in their description links.
Okay, now it is time for me to execute some of my own plans. Yes, that is what I have been doing this morning. Planning my garden for the summer.
And this is what I did yesterday, I planted out loads of seedlings.
Some of them even from seeds that I saved from my crops last year. That along with canning, freezing, and drying are the focus of my learning during this critical time.
Goddess bless and keep you safe,
From our @HomeCrazzyHome to yours.
